Alexandria Wittmann

Allie Wittmann (b. 1998) grew up in a small rural farming town in Wisconsin. From a young age she has been fascinated with all types of art, but light became the inspiration and her current obsession in her practice after recently moving to Portland, Maine. After receiving her Bachelors in Humanistic Studies from University Wisconsin La Crosse in 2020, she chose to pursue her Masters in Studio Art at Maine College of Art and Design and  there she has branched into light installation and in depth research of material. Her most recent work is emphasizing the interaction between body and mind, perception, and how material can provide form to the formless.

Untitled (Just Blue) 2023: Research of materiality, light, and form is the foundation for Wittmann’s work. Her use of cast shadows, spatial awareness, and form decenters the necessity of a tangible art object within contemporary artwork. Wittmann’s work references and pays tribute to the Light and Space movement, while also using the environment of the present. These elements converse with movement within a space and spiritual connections, similar to stained glass windows and the landscapes outside them.

This year’s exhibition features work in a variety of media, including: drawing; video; performance; sculpture; painting; printmaking; virtual reality; fiber; photography; and, installation. Seen together, the thesis projects hybridize a range of conceptual themes and material approaches as they relate to visual culture, the political landscape and to contemporary art practice. The work in the exhibition represents the synthesis of each graduate candidate’s experience in the Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art program at Maine College of Art & Design.
